GMD DISPATCH 8.0: Going Home
As we finished our last 3.2 High Life atop the ridge above Alta’s High Rustler, a group of friends and I watched the sun dip behind the grandiose peak of Mount Superior.
GMD DISPATCH: Week four—enjoying the good life
On Saturday morning, after I raced down from my breakfast shift at Alta’s Goldminer’s Daughter restaurant, I was elated to see that patrol still wasn't letting people load the chair, despite the time nearing 10 o'clock. I hadn't missed anything yet, though the lines for Wildcat and Collins were so long they morphed into each other and pushed skiers to the fringe of the parking lot.
GMD Week 3: The Season Begins
It was a typical opening day, while the skiing wasn’t great, everybody there was just happy to see the season officially start.
GMD DISPATCH: Still Waiting
Since moving in to the Goldminer’s Daughter on the 15th, the scene hasn’t changed. Beyond the beers chilling on the sill, a few cars sit parked on dry pavement, and the Wildcat Chair is motionless above a patchy layer of snow.
GMD DISPATCH: Rookie entering the Promised Land
On Thursday I moved into the Goldminer’s Daughter. The lodge sits about 50 yards from the Collins chair at Alta, Utah. I’m going to spend my winter here, in a small hotel room that has suffered the abuse of hosting young, core skiers for years.
GROM WATCH: Andy Partridge
Powder decided to highlight groms from all over the world in our new online feature, titled Grom Watch. Take a peek at these photos and videos of our first grom, Andy Partridge.
GOING HOME: Remembering a friend at the ‘Bird
Snowbird, Utah, lost one of its own last year. Mike Merrill, a Salt Lake City native son, passed away in early June 2006 after succumbing to internal injuries he received after getting hit by a drunk driver while riding his bike on a spring trip to Moab. He was 29.
CHASING AN ICON: Mt. Shuskan
Last summer, a seemingly harmless photo captured my attention. I had seen images of Mount Shuksan before, but nothing quite like this. A Northwest Icon connected to Mount Baker ski area by the famous Shuksan Arm, the mountain has become one of the most photographed peaks in the world.
Red (Green) Machine: Corn-fed cats
RED CATS GO GREEN! Big Red Cat Skiing will be running each of its three snow cats on a 25 percent blend of corn-based ethanol for the 2007-2008 season.
CHOPS FOR CHARITY: Young Aussie raises $1000 for SSA
Jodan Cook, a 15-year-old skier gromm from Falls Creek, Australia, raised around $1000 in donations for the Stand Strong Again (SSA) foundation by chopping off his three-year-old "dreadies" on Saturday, June 9th in a pub located near the ski hill.
